Our Story

How we got here

Our work began with a conviction that Kansas City deserved stages where its own stories could be told with craft, care, and cultural truth. Generations of artists, educators, audiences, and volunteers built that foundation, one production and one classroom at a time.

The Mosaic Collective carries that work forward. The name reflects what we see when we look across this region: distinct pieces — cultures, neighborhoods, art forms, generations — that become something luminous when they are set side by side.

Heritage & Expansion

Honoring the Black Repertory Theatre of Kansas City

The Mosaic Collective grew out of the Black Repertory Theatre of Kansas City, founded by Damron Russel Armstrong.

Mr. Armstrong filled a need by giving Black artists, playwrights, and audiences a professional home, making Black storytelling a permanent part of this city’s cultural life.

That legacy is not behind us; it is beneath us. It is our foundation and demonstrates our continued commitment to artists whose stories have too often been left off the season calendar.

As The Mosaic Collective, we widen the circle. We remain deeply committed to Black theatre and Black artistry while creating space for the many cultures, languages, and lived experiences that make up Greater Kansas City landscape.

Legacy, heritage and expansion, held together.
